hate something!!

"if you don't like something-- change it.
if you can not change it, change the way you think about it"

i don't know who FIRST said it-- Mahatma Gandhi, Maya Angelou, or my dad for that matter! i just know it's easier said than done. i am questioning - if changing the way you think about something is mere conformity or a more honorable act-- a sort of 'taking one for the team' for the sake of progress & unity...(THERE'S that word AGAIN).
the middle part of the quote is possibly where we should focus-- the big 2-letter word IF starts the thought off; if you can not change it... implies that we should minimally attempt to change the things we dislike or the injustices we witness.

ok, my father is not responsible for the mentioned quote-- but he can take credit for this one:

"bad things happen because good people stand by and do nothing..."

maybe those good people are the ones that don't try to change the corrupt things around them. maybe they just do not know how, which is another blog all together!  what drives a person to sit silently with inward disapproval and listen to a conversation they know is wrong, or on the far end of extreme tape enough gunpowder to their own chest and walk somberly into eternity, taking others with them, for something they believe to be right?
N E WAYS... here's a lil video honda put out like 2 years ago that i just came across that provoked some thought for me...let me know what you hate enough to change...
oh and it's sung in the key of Grrr...

we started by meeting @ the budz by 6:15 for pizza (thanx gabe) and coffee...they are seriously the coolest family to n joy (if you can actually get them to sit still long enough)! we pinned our race bibs on and hit the road for the turkey trot. gary was the chief (aggraviter-lol) -- christa & brandon were lil indians (u can call her prosperity from now on...). hannah & shalene were twins (imagine that), and mike & bethany were santa's lil elves...just check that group pic out!! whata group!!
we took a lil too much time getting ready cuz we JUST made it in time for the National Anthem... too close for comfort (we turned a 6.2 mile run into an 8 miler--had to scale two walls and a fence & run on the freeway just to make it on time...).. but alas all's well that ends well & we had sooo much fun running this year's trot (that's actually what i did--trot!!!)...

then off to the most anticipated meal of the year...with a family that loves to b together! man, EVERY room in nana's & papa's house is FILLED with our precious family being us--snuggling, laughing, sharing & playing games..so very much to b thankful for.

thank you, family- we are so fortunate to have each other!

...with our favs @ buckers....

with jeanette @ soccer, shalene, angie and i grab our fav things to kill some time before church and head to buckers....
angie is seriously living in the 'twilight' zone, and wants to marry a vampire (LIKE GET IN LINE GURL!!!)... she's on the third book already...
now shalene is a bit more consistent in her reading material.... the saks & neiman's holiday issues & the winter '08 burberry collection---
and for me? a lil time with my iphone is just enough to keep me busy...now add a couple of skinny cinnamon dolce lattes and...voila! a nice lil break with my girlies!!

voting in america...

3:39 PM Edit This 2 Comments »

so it's over. we have a new president and i hope you all did ur civil duty....we did...shalene and i in a most uncivilized manner...
first she went and waited for over 35 minutes in line. she left without voting and i arrived and was sad that the line was so long(actually they had a line to get into a line)! to my surprise beautiful danielle was in line behind me which always makes for a pleasant experience. shalene called and said that she was on her way so we told her to come.... 20 minutes later she shows up and jumps right in line with danielle, our new cop friend, and i. i was appalled, but agreed to let her stay in line with us (and i NEVER looked behind us for the ENTIRE hour and a half that we waited)!
anyways we had a great time with our new friends, chatting, laughing, playing ms pac man on our iphones, and discussing the legalization of pot. finally got in the front of thi line and was met with a cranky senior citizen who demanded that we be more patient and wait for a pink slip to adhere our name sticker on and then directed us...YOU GOT IT... to another line...YIKES! there has to b a better way... i mean there were four empty voting stations consistently.... so we would like to announce that next election we are going to volunteer to run that place in an efficient manner and include refreshments and entertainment!!!! thanks guys-- it really wasn't that bad....

oh yeah one more thought....how about next election we do it american idol style.... debates for two weeks-- a week of open forum and then open the phone lines up and america votes.....

family fun day!

6:53 PM Edit This 4 Comments »

family fun day took on a new meaning today as the fisher girls were
forced by nature to do the unthinkable: YARDWORK!
we cut we raked we pulled we picked we dumped and we laughed and laughed.
angie and shalene came up with a clever 'win-win' idea to enable us to rid
ourselves of this horrendous  job:
gift half of our yard to mr linden  (since he apparently has
nothing better to do than wash his cars for the 3rd time this week),
and the other to mr seger (whom we've affectionately dubbed 'farmer bob' for his obvious love of working the earth)-- EVERYBODY'S happy!...
christmas is coming boys...

where is jeanette, you may be why we would not include jeanette in such an exciting afternoon event?!? well the lil gurl sprained her ankle at her v-ball tournie yesterday and had to abstain from all activites, no matter how enjoyable they may be!!
the lil trooper had her ankle uber-taped and was instrumental in helping her team take 2nd!

great halloween fun!

i remember

~my mother dressing me as the best witch ever (no comments please)...
~trick or treating till my pillowcase was on the verge of exploding, stopping @ home to dump and heading out to reload
~one halloween where our home was broken into and the burglars fed the doggies my halloween candy to keep them quiet!
~dressing as a really convincing gypsy in my mom's square dancing outfit (WHERE'D that go?)
~constructing and being a pair of dice with my buddy laura...
~letting susan actually talk me into laying in that coffin (anything for a photo op!)
~the infamous incident at roberts halloween party--that i will NEVER seem to live down...

good times... and this year has more good times to add to the halloween memoirs...

CHI '08

8:12 PM Edit This 2 Comments »
wow whata weekend! it was quite the time with all the 'chi runners'...
so very proud of them for setting out to and accomplishing this goal!
bethany, christa, gabe, hannah, jesse, michael & shalene...
26.2 in scorching heat...each overcoming own battles--of the body & mind but
definitely not spirit!
now for this lil gurl named shalene...
she was dehydrated & heat exhausted, my heart pulled me to the streets around mile 20...
i hopped in to encourage her and we ended up running the last miles of the race hand-in-hand.
the conditions got the best of 13,000 runners who dropped out (did i mention 89 degrees?)
but shalene pressed on to finish!

if anyone wants to borrow my running outfit...just lmk...
the look of determination...                                                                                                 ...the look of success!

                                                                      of a job well done...

and the look of reward!!

3 years...

9:12 PM Edit This 2 Comments »

three years ago tonight,
my best friend lay in my arms and slipped into heaven...
she was:
incredibly patient and kind.  she was never boastful, conceited, or rude.
she was notself-seeking nor easily angered.
she kept absolutely no record of wrong-doing...
she always protected, trusted, hoped and God knows the woman persevered.
in a word, she was love.

her words are inscribed in my heart...

"...i resolve with all my heart to live just one day.
do my best and then finish the day.
profit by my mistakes.  be tolerant of others and try not to criticize,
just do my own clear duty and leave the results to God.
be glad of pain if pain be sent.  for out of pain and suffering
grow the beautiful things of life,
if we keep out eyes lifted above the clouds
and look for the 'silver-lining'.
life is only a day quickly passed and gone.  Give All"

happy mail...

1:35 AM Edit This 1 Comment »
as i emptied my mailbox this afternoon, i remembered again the discussion i had with a friend over coffee yesterday...
what ever happened to good old fashioned
letter writing?
bills, advertisements, bills, political postcards (some of them HUGE), and yet a few more bills...  it's gotten to the point where if it weren't for my mother,
God bless her soul,
there would be no reason at all for me to make the trip to the curb!
love letters, birthday cards, appreciation letters, i am fine how r u letters, thank you notes, thinking of you cards,
hey i read this article and thought of you envelopes...
plain and silmply entitled:
HAPPY MAIL
my mother has this down to a science.  she is the happy mail queen.
a book of stamps, a page from her devotional (cleverly not-so-hidden meanings)...
all arrive in envelopes that could be framed for their sparkling beauty.  they're the very first that i open--what about you?
do you open your bills or the envelope that most likely holds a smile inside?
i'd bet we all go for the smile...
but if no one is sending then who's smiling?
i have a box of letters & notes that have been sent to me over the years.
every once in awhile i lose myself in that box...
what can we tuck away for the future if all we do is email, text & call?
i for one am going to purpose to send a smile out more often...
yup! via snail mail---
